Punam Raut walked despite being given not out after she got a faint edge on a delivery from off-spinner Sophie Molineux which was caught by the Australia wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy. India were in a position of strength at 217 for 2 when Punam decided to walk on 36.In fact, the second new-ball was due for Australia. The hosts’ decision to persist with the old ball worked as they got Punam, who was stalling Australia’s charge after Smriti Mandhana’s wicket. But even as majority of the cricketing fraternity is hailing Punam for upholding the ‘spirit of cricket’ by walking, Snehal Pradhan doesn’t feel the experienced India No. 3 should have given herself out by doing what she did. There is no DRS (Decision Review System) available for this Test match so Punam could have carried on had she not walked off.”The spirit of cricket is a concept that probably does more harm than good. We’ve got the rules, they should be enough,” Snehal, who played 6 ODIs and 4 T20Is for India, told ABC Sport.Unbelievable scenes Punam Raut is given not out, but the Indian No.3 walks! #AUSvIND | @CommBank pic.twitter.com/xfAMsfC9s1— cricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) October 1, 2021

Notably, only 44 overs were bowled on the opening day as well with rain washing out most of the last two sessions.Click here for our site’s complete coverage of the coronavirus pandemic.
